Waxing in La Jolla: The Ultimate Guide

How waxing compares to shaving, how long smooth skin really lasts, how to prep, and why we ask you not to exfoliate for 48 hours around your appointment.

Smooth skin after hair removal at BeautyMark Shop

Most people who walk into the studio for a first wax are a little nervous. They have heard stories, or they had a rushed appointment somewhere years ago that they would rather not repeat. That reputation is what we spend most of our time undoing. With warm wax, properly prepped skin and a practitioner who tells you what is happening before it happens, waxing is quick, tolerable and genuinely worth it.

Here is what we tell clients before their first appointment.

Why choose waxing over shaving

Shaving cuts hair at the surface. Waxing removes it from the root, and that single difference drives every other benefit.

  • It lasts. Shave, and you are usually back at the razor within two days. After a wax, most clients see regrowth start at around three to four weeks, and some go as long as five or six weeks depending on the area and their own growth cycle.
  • Regrowth comes back finer. A razor leaves a blunt end, which is why stubble feels stubby and coarse. Hair removed from the follicle grows back with a naturally tapered tip, so the first days of regrowth do not feel prickly.
  • It clears dead skin along the way. Wax lifts surface debris as it lifts hair. It is not a substitute for proper exfoliation, but skin does look cleaner and brighter afterward.
  • No shaving rash. If razor burn, red bumps and irritation are a monthly frustration, a month between waxes gives that skin a real chance to calm down.

Waxing is also affordable, works on nearly every area of the face and body, and takes very little time once you are on a rhythm.

How we wax at BeautyMark Shop

Tali uses warm wax, which is gentler on sensitive skin than very hot formulas, and preps the skin dry and clean so the wax grips hair rather than skin. Hygiene standards are strict and there is no double-dipping, ever.

We wax brows, lip and face, arms, legs, underarms and back, plus bikini and Brazilian, for women and men. If it is your first Brazilian, say so when you book. Tali will talk you through it, keep it quick and keep it comfortable. Clients tell us regularly that it is the most comfortable wax they have had, and that is the standard we hold ourselves to.

Getting the best result

  1. Let it grow. Hair needs to be about a quarter of an inch, roughly two to three weeks of growth, for the wax to grip. Shaving between appointments resets the clock.
  2. Skip exfoliation for 48 hours on either side. Scrubs, acids and retinoids around your appointment leave skin more sensitive and more likely to lift. Resume gentle exfoliation after that window to keep ingrown hairs away.
  3. Come clean and dry. No heavy lotion or oil on the area that day.
  4. Plan around sun and heat. Give freshly waxed skin a day away from strong sun, hot tubs, saunas and heavy workouts.
  5. Book on a cycle. Waxing every four weeks keeps hair on the same growth phase, which makes each appointment faster and more effective.

If you want the hair to stop coming back

Waxing manages hair. Epilfree reduces it. It is a machine-free, non-laser herbal system applied immediately after a wax or sugaring, while the follicles are open, and over a series of sessions hair returns finer and sparser until it largely stops. Because it does not rely on pigment, it works on blonde, red and grey hair and on every skin tone. Ask Tali whether adding it to your waxing appointment makes sense for you.

While you are in the chair, it is also a good moment to talk about the rest of your skin. Many waxing clients pair appointments with a facial or a professional peel so brightening and anti-aging work stays on the same schedule.
