HIFU Treatment in La Jolla: A BeautyMark Shop Guide
How HIFU lifts and firms with focused ultrasound, what happens during a session at our La Jolla studio, who it suits and what to expect afterward.
Skin loosens gradually. The jawline softens, the neck starts to crease, the cheeks sit a little lower than they used to. For a long time the only real answer was surgery. HIFU changed that, and it has become the most requested non-invasive lifting treatment we offer. Here is how it works and what a session at BeautyMark Shop involves.
What HIFU is
HIFU stands for high-intensity focused ultrasound. The device sends ultrasound energy through the surface of the skin and focuses it at a precise depth below, in the foundational layer that a surgeon would otherwise lift. The energy heats small points of tissue quickly. That controlled thermal stimulus triggers the body’s natural repair response, and the repair response builds new collagen.
Collagen is the protein that gives skin its structure and firmness. More of it means tighter, smoother skin with softer lines. Because the beams are focused below the surface, the outer layer is left intact, which is why there is no wound to heal and no downtime.
The FDA first cleared HIFU technology in 2009 for a non-invasive brow lift. Clearances since then have extended to improving lines and wrinkles on the neckline and upper chest.
Who it suits
HIFU is not right for everyone. It works best for people over thirty with mild to moderate skin laxity, where there is still enough collagen response to build on. If the laxity is significant, Tali will tell you plainly that a different approach, or a different profession, will serve you better. That honesty is the point of the consultation.
It is used on the face, neck, décolleté and body, and it also forms part of our body slimming protocol alongside Sudatonic infrared wraps.
What HIFU can address
- Wrinkle reduction across the face
- Tightening of sagging skin on the neck
- Lifting the cheeks, brows and eyelid area
- Sharper jawline definition
- Firming the décolleté
- Smoothing overall skin texture
Interest in the treatment has grown steadily over the past several years, a trend tracked by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery among other non-invasive options.
How to prepare
There is very little to do. Arrive with clean skin, or at least without makeup and without the serums and creams you would normally layer on that morning. Tell Tali about any medication, recent injectables or procedures, and any implants or metal in the treatment area, since these affect planning.
What happens during your appointment
- Tali cleanses the treatment area thoroughly.
- A topical numbing cream is applied and given time to work.
- Ultrasound gel goes on to couple the device to the skin.
- The handpiece is placed against the skin.
- Using the ultrasound viewer, Tali checks the depth and adjusts the device settings for your anatomy.
- Energy is delivered in short pulses across the mapped area. Depending on the size of the area, this takes roughly thirty to ninety minutes.
- The handpiece is removed and the gel cleaned away.
Most clients describe brief warmth or a prickling sensation as each line of energy is delivered. It is manageable, and Tali will pace the session to your comfort.
Afterward
You can return to your normal day as soon as you walk out. There is nothing to cover and nothing to avoid beyond ordinary sun sense. Some people notice slight redness or mild swelling, which usually settles within a few hours. A faint tingling or tenderness in the treated area can linger for a few weeks as the collagen response gets underway, and that is a sign the treatment is doing its job.
When you will see results
This is the part worth understanding before you book. HIFU does not deliver an instant lift. Collagen takes time to form, so the change builds gradually over two to three months and continues from there. Some areas benefit from a series, and payment plans are available for series so you can spread the cost.
Ask Tali first
If sagging around the jaw or neck is what brought you here, book a consultation and let Tali assess your skin in person. She will tell you whether HIFU is the right tool, whether microcurrent or a peel would serve you better, and what a realistic timeline looks like.
