First Step to Skin Care: A Good Regimen
The four steps of a basic skin care regimen, how often to do each one, and why the product your friend loves may be the wrong one for your skin.
Tali has a question she has been asking for twenty years: why do so many people book a manicure and pedicure twice a month and never once book a facial? Your nails are lovely. Your face is the thing everyone looks at, and it is the part of you working hardest against sun, wind and time. The logic has never added up for her.
So let us start at the beginning. Not with a treatment, not with a product haul, but with a regimen, because that is the foundation everything else sits on.
Not all products are alike
The moisturizer your friend raves about is not necessarily the one for you. Her skin is not your skin. It may have different oil production, different sensitivity, a different barrier and a different history with the sun.
This is the single most expensive mistake we see. People spend hundreds on a routine assembled from recommendations and reviews, use it for six weeks, and end up with skin that is more irritated than when they started. A visit with a skin therapist first will tell you what you are actually working with, and it usually saves you money rather than costing it.
The four steps of a good regimen
A basic regimen is not complicated. It is four steps, and three of them happen twice a day.
- Cleanse. Morning and night. This removes the oil, sweat and pollution of the day and, in the evening, makeup and sunscreen. Choose a formula that leaves your skin comfortable, not squeaky. Squeaky means stripped.
- Tone. Morning and night, right after cleansing. A toner rebalances the skin’s pH after cleansing and preps it to absorb what comes next.
- Moisturize. Morning and night. This is what seals water into the skin and supports the barrier. Dry skin generally needs a richer formula, oily skin a lighter one, and both need something.
- Exfoliate. Usually twice a week, though the right frequency depends on the product and on your skin. Some formulas and some skins want less. This is the step people most often overdo, and over-exfoliation is one of the most common causes of dehydrated, reactive skin we see in the studio.
To that we would add one more, which matters as much as all four: wear sunscreen every day. In La Jolla, sun exposure is the single largest driver of lines, uneven tone and a weakened barrier, and daily SPF is the most effective anti-aging step available to you.
Tip of the day: listen to your skin
You do not need to understand ingredient lists to know whether a product is right for you. Your skin will tell you.
If a product leaves your skin feeling tight, dry or itchy, it is not the right fit. That is not a purging phase and it is not the product working. It is an adverse reaction, and continuing with it tends to make things worse in ways that are not obvious at first. Stripped skin often responds by producing more oil to compensate, which leads to breakouts, which people then treat with something even more aggressive. That cycle is one of the most common stories we hear from new clients.
Stop the product. Give your skin a week of gentle cleansing and simple moisturizing. If it settles, you have your answer.
Where professional treatment fits
A good home regimen does most of the daily work. Professional treatment does the things you cannot do at home: proper extractions, exfoliation at a strength that needs trained hands, and the collagen-stimulating steps in a facial or a peel. Most clients book every four to six weeks and alternate modalities, so results build instead of plateauing.
Our goal has always been to teach you good skin care, give you tips you can use and answer the questions you have been carrying around. Come in for a facial, bring the products you are currently using, and let Tali tell you which ones are earning their place.
